Rebuilding Vs. Updating
New build or update?
For many businesses, the question comes up “Do we need a new website build, or can we just update our old site?”
To correctly answer this question, you’ll need to take a few things into consideration first. For example, if you have a current website, but it just doesn’t seem to be working well for getting traffic, ask yourself these questions:
1. When was the last time it was updated?
2. Is it a coded site, or a template?
3. What SEO/Online Marketing tactics are you using?
4. Does it still convey the image you want for the company?
5. Is the information about the company correct and current, especially phone numbers, addresses, and social media links?
Once you’ve gone through these questions, take the next step and decide exactly how much would need to be updated. Is it just a little bit of information and some images? If that’s the case, a rebuild wouldn’t be cost effective for the results you need. However, if there are a lot of updates, the site is a template, or the entire image and information needs an overhaul, you might want to genuinely consider a new site. Many times, the hourly cost will far outprice an entire site rebuild, as most reputable companies now prices site builds as a one-time price package instead of an hourly build.
If you are going to pay someone hourly, make sure you get an estimate of the hours before the project starts. This ensures that it’s still within your budget, and that it’s something you want for your business. And, as always, make sure that you’re getting a coded site when you do this, and not just a template site. Apart from Google’s requirements, your business is unique, and you deserve a website that is, too.
If your website is current, coded, and matches your company image, but still not getting traffic, take a look at your online marketing strategies. Are you staying active with your social media and posting according to the best business practice guidelines? Do your social media links all work correctly? Is your content current and custom, meaning that it’s unique to your sites? Are you keyworded correctly, and not overdone (we all love information, but not repetition)? Do the maps all work correctly? There are many, many pieces to online marketing and if the majority of them aren’t set up and working correctly, that could be a HUGE factor in not getting traffic to your site.
If all of those factors are in place, set up correctly, but still not getting the results you want, it’s time to call in an expert and have them do an analysis of what’s really going on with your website, the categories you’re trying to rank in, and your current practices. Sometimes there just may be factors you don’t see, or even know about that, can affect your website and how it’s working.
